Introduction/Background Information:
Start with a little information about the author and
any general details about the book that might be useful to a future reader.
Examples: Is this a first book for a new
author? The most recent? Is it a part of a series? Did the time period of the writing affect the content or style? What
genre does the book fall under (historical fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, biography)?
The Plot:
Don't
give away too much! The plot should be briefly outlined, characters introduced, general events described. Don't give away
surprises or twists. You want to wet the readers' appetites.
This section of your review will let the reader know
what he/she is in for if he or she decides to read the book.
Your Opinion:
This should be
the bulk of your review. The most important thing to do is to make it personal. What did YOU think of the book? Did you find
it boring, funny, entertaining? What were your favorite attributes (cliff-hangers, realistic characters, plot twists)?
This
is the place where you should talk about any themes you may have noticed. What messages is the author trying to send? Is he/she
successful? Did you like the writing style? Was the story realistic? Was it funny? Sad?
Include personal experiences
in this section. Is this the first book you've read by this author? The tenth? Have you read similar books by other authors?
Did you pick this book because you liked the topic or genre? How does this book compare to other books you've read?
The
Conclusion:
Bring all of the above pieces together. Are you glad you took the time to read it? Was it a quick
read? Did you struggle to get through it? Give your overall impression of the book and comment about what type of reader might
enjoy this book.
